Train to the real clock
Fighters train to the same round length they compete at so their pacing becomes automatic: you learn where the two-minute mark sits in your legs. The bell here rings three strikes at the start and end of every round, with a three-beep count-in from the corner so you are up and guarded when it goes. Rules vary by sanctioning body and weight class, so check your own event’s format.
Questions
How long is a boxing round?
Professional men’s boxing rounds are 3 minutes with 1 minute of rest. Professional women’s bouts usually use 2-minute rounds. Amateur (Olympic-style) bouts use three 3-minute rounds.
How many rounds should I do on the heavy bag?
Many boxing gyms run 3 to 6 rounds of bag work in a session, with a minute of rest between. Start with fewer, keep the quality high and add rounds as your conditioning improves.
What is the warning clap?
In many gyms a clap or knock signals 10 seconds left in the round so you can empty the tank. This timer gives a double clap 10 seconds before each round ends when “10-second warning” is ticked.
